Cheap Turns Out Expensive

You might say this phrase is wrong, an exaggeration, or something only people with lots of money would say. But let me share with you the experience of one of MataSeguros’ founders, who learned the hard way that taking the cheapest option often ends up costing more — in money, time, and frustration.

When he rented his first apartment abroad, he was a rookie, didn’t have much money, and the purple color of the bedroom drove him crazy.

So, he started looking for painters — and had the “brilliant idea” of hiring one who was much cheaper than the rest but had no references. He thought it was a genius move, that he had found someone selling gold for pennies.

But here’s the lesson he learned: cheap work ends up expensive. After hiring this painter and getting a mediocre result, he had to hire a second one, who not only gave him a look that said “what were you thinking?” but also had to redo all the work.

In the end, he paid 50% more for the service and twice for the paint. He lost countless hours arguing with the first painter and then looking for someone to fix the disaster.

The moral of the story: we don’t want the same thing to happen to you. We want you to get results in the most efficient way and in the least amount of time.

Friends or acquaintances might offer to help or give you advice on how to handle your claim — with the best of intentions — but without the right tools or experience, the questions you should ask before choosing someone to represent you are:
